I am not sure pre-k should be considered government run daycare. Childrens brains develop so fast early on that social skills and simple learning can/are obtained many times in all types of settings. I believe reading or being read to should be part of any pre-k curriculum, however, social settings in my mind is just as important. If social interaction is considered day care, than so be it. My children like yours have attended pre-k with learning involved, not just play time.
