For a mere mortal, a 53% approval rating would be OK. But a Master of the Political Universe like Governor Richardson? That number (a ten point drop from previous polls) ought to cause the Guv real concern.

Some on Richardson's staff, like Chief of Staff David Contarino (who has been working overtime spinning the numbers), get it. But can they correct it? Given the level of hubris invovled in some quarters of the Roundhouse, it's doubtful.

If the New Mexico GOP can run a campaign that doesn't mimic Citizens for Greater Albuquerque or Winter for Mayor (and yes -- that's a shot at a certain clique in the party...), J.R. Damron might have a real chance next November.

At least let's hope he does!
