Well I personally think that they are both local issues. Living in Albuquerque, I don't expect for a person in Las Cruces or Raton to care about the Rail Runner. Living in Albuquerque, I wouldn't expect a fellow ABQ Citizen, or a person in Raton, or Farmington to care enough about a Spaceport in T or C to want to foot the bill. The Spaceport won't really affect the Northern Half of New Mexico at all. To me they are both local issues, or at least semi-regional. I would not consider either one a full state-wide issue.
Eventually the Rail Runner will cover half the state and will be accessible to more than half the population of New Mexico and conceivably unburden motor vehicle commuters by some amount. How many of us are going to use the Spaceport for local travel? Unless we use it as a commuter craft to get to get to Santa Fe or Los Lunas I don't see how these two are comparable.
Mario tries to make it a Democratic issue but I recall talking to Senator Domenici about it (Spaceport) and he was 100% behind it.
hey genius, those "4 out of 33 counties" represent about HALF the population of the entire state.
modern transit connecting our most populated areas is good for the state and so is a spaceport down south. they are both examples of richardson dragging "north mexico" kicking and screaming into the 21st century and objective new mexicans of all political stripes see this.
I have to say I am shocked at Ben Lujans comments but then again his staff lives in free housing from the Housing Authority so I shouldn't be shocked. It is geographic racism that the train will be paid by everyone but the spaceport will be charged to a few! When Ben Lujan says a deal is a deal i guess when the Sec of Transportation told the Transportation committee that they operating costs would be paid for by a local tax is a different deal then the Spaceport! Lets get the Housing Authority money back frm SMiley and Ben Lujan that alone should be enough to pay for both projects!
I have to say I was suprised to hear that Allen Weh thinks the train is a brilliant idea? What planet is this guy from, next thing you know he will say the Republicans in the Legislature should support a tax increase to pay for this. Is this guy for real? With leadership like him it is no shock we are the minority party and under his leadership will probably remain there for some time.
