Of course, earlier he could have voted absentee, which has been a paper ballot all along. I seem to remember that the lines for early voting were just as long last time, especially in the last few days. (Early voting started Oct. 10.) You still need to read over the ballot and mark your choices, as before. And you have to have done your homework before you go to vote.
It's unfortunate that you can't easily tell on this ballot how far voting "straight ticket" takes you. They need a double line or other marker there. By stopping when he did, he skipped the non-partisan judge races, the constitutional amendments and bond issues.

My parents voted on Tuesday and it took them 2hrs and 15min. This Tuesday is going to be a nightmare. Given that there is no set policy about when voting stops i.e. if you are standing in line at 7PM do you get to still vote? Not necessarily that is has been left up to the Presiding Judge of the Polling place. Normal practice has been that those standing in line at 7PM get to vote but no others can join the line. However if a Presiding Judge decides that the door close at 7PM and all voting stop regardless if you are standing in line. My guess is that there will be some gnashing of teeth come Tuesday.

I want to vote on election day. It just seems more right, more of an event.
Irrational, but true.

I'm really interested in hearing about how things "early voting" go today, the last day for doing so.
Everybody (sample size...not that big) seems to think that the voting schema this time around will have an impact...but we're not sure what the impact will be exactly.
I'd wager that the slowness, generally uninteresting ballot and all will lead to more straight party voting..and that helps Democrats, especially Baca. But I'd want pretty good odds on my wager..I'm still unsure.
I feel more sure that it's gonna be a long Tuesday night for many of us....real long.
P.S.: (personal note) thanks Mario for taking time to help us out at Jefferson. In teacher/student parlance...you rock!

I voted today at Osuna and 4th. It only took 50 minutes. I think for now, paper ballots are the right way to go until the electronic machines get all the bugs worked out. Even if electronic gets fixed there needs to be a paper trail. Overall, I think election day will go pretty smoothly if its anything like today.
And also, Mary Herrera said that the early voting site I went to today gad been the busiest. I don't know why Mr. Burgos titled his article "Paper Ballot Havoc." It seems to be giobng fairly well. The people in Ohio and Florida would be rejoicing if they only had to wait in line for 2 hours!

Da? the famous hanging chads were in Dem. controled counties in Florida on ballots designed by Dems. but still Dem. voters were to enept to follow instructions. Would voting machines be alright if Bill(HWWBK) had delivered New Mexico for Mr.Kerry as promised. Paper, oh yeah back to the good old days.

JD, that's all very interesting, but it seems you're either trying to spin the situation, or you just lucked out with a 50 minute experience. Even Albuquerque Tribune report Kate Nelson is reporting a 90 minute wait.
If Mary Herrera is saying that your polling place is the busiest, maybe she is not being quite honest with us.
