I was disgusted to hear that this Marine was sentenced to jail when all he was doing was protecting himself and his family.

And when did burglary become an offense punishable by death? I have no issue with Richard shooting someone ON his property in defense of his property, but chasing the perp 1400 feet away and then fatally shooting him is, frankly, overkill. This is supposed to be a society governed by rule of law, not the Wild West. I actually have a bigger issue with the court ordered restitution to be paid to Romero's family. That seems excessive given that the man was unlikely to maintain gainful employment.

You have every right to defend yourself and your property, but when you are chasing after someone and then shoot them that is not acceptable.

It was a bad decision and certainly did not need to come to the death of anyone.

Also, the robber didn't even have any sort of weapon (maybe a wrench?). Thats excessive force using a gun on someone running away.

The judge lowered the sentence to as low as possible under the circumstances, but the like the previous poster said, the restitution was unnecessary.

Okay but do you really think he should have to pay the family 500.00 a month?

no I don't. Thats why I said I think the restitution is unneccessary and shouldnt have been part of the punishment.

They really shouldn't get paid for raising a robber.

But we as citizens, since we are given our second amendment rights, need to be responsible with or firearms. He should have known the law...everyone should know the law when it comes to protecting someones property.

Gravatar Mario, I was disappointed , yet not surprised to hear you on 770 today. To be on with the Republican DA candidate trying to make a political gain so close to the sentencing was disgusting. Why not what until down the road and bring it up in a wide range debate? You should be embarrassed.

The fact is this guy was no longer protecting his family, as a matter of fact he left them a quarter mile behind. The judge had no choice in the sentencing. He showed no remorse, in fact he thought he did nothing wrong even though he pled guilty to a crime. A judge, when sentencing, must think whether the person will commit the same crime again (remember he plead guilty to one). Remorse would have shown he learned something from the event and hopefully would not do the same thing again. A sentence with some teeth was needed to prevent the event from happening again.

Gravatar what= wait

Agian saying he would do it all over again was a mistake.

Gravatar Fred, being on KKOB was not about political gain. It was about a candidate discussing a VERY relevant issue in a VERY timely manner. District Attorney Kari Brandenburg was on KKOB at the 4 o'clock hour, so it only makes sense that her opponent Lisa Torraco would also get equal time.

As to your point about sentencing, there was no crime against society committed, so there was no reason to show remorse. If Mr. Richard had shot the twice convicted felon on the spot when he found him breaking and entering, he wouldn't have even been on trial.

So, Mr. Richard's biggest "crime" was trying to do the right thing and apprehend a criminal rather than kill him immediately. Ultimately, this resulted in the predator's death, and a hero's incarceration.

The only result of putting Mr. Richard behind bars is to make the streets a little safer for the criminal element.

You tell me how that is just.

Gravatar Maybe a change in the judicial system. Who ever heard of something more absurd than to have monthly payments for a criminal's family. Come on, what has he done for society EXCEPT steal and break the law. That's whats wrong in today's society. It's sooooo PC to give to the criminals and not the everyday heroes. The law abiding people DO NOT owe a criminal or their family a damn thing.

Gravatar Mario, he pled guilty to a crime. To admit you did something wrong, and yet say you would do it all again, is not good. If he felt that way, he should have just flat out pled not guilty. He may have beat it.
If you really wanted to help a Republican candidate you should have had Heather on. Looks like she will have issues outside the county against Steve.
Better yet how about Mr White, oh yah he isn't talking question in a media setting. He must be doing his homework. Well I can wait for Madrid moment, this summer or fall.

Gravatar Fred, I know Darren and I know Patsy.

Darren is no Patsy.

Gravatar Frank why won't he take question in a public forum attended by the media? My guess he doesn't know the issues. He could come on to 770am in the afternoom at anytime. Why won't he do it. In the end he will end up just like Madrid, defeated. Joe is your best bet. He does well when hit at. He understand the legislative process. Why let the party bosses determine your choice?
