You claim that Palin is extremely knowledgeable about (among other issues) the environment, but she actually thinks that global warming is not caused by human activities. That doesn't make her knowledgeable, it makes her either stupid or blindly/self-servingly partisan. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and assume the latter.

This really reeks of desperation on McCain's part. He's clearly trying to grab Hillary voters (which won't work) and at the same time shore up his reputation with the far right wing social cro-magnons who believe (along with Palin) that contraception is murder. That second part might work (the morons at NRO are ecstatic that McCain chose someone whose social views are to the right of Pat Buccanan) but I don't think it will make any inroads with the independents that McCain actually needs to win. I suspect that the McCain campaign will have to spend a lot more time and energy covering up how far right Palin actually is on social issues.

This is all assuming that the sudden national attention doesn't completely blow open Palin's alleged use of her office to fire her ex brother-in-law. I'll assume for the moment that the McCain campaign isn't so incompetent as to have nominated her without being 110% sure that there was nothing to it.

Gravatar You and me both, Mario. I predicted McCain would pick Palin days ago. Once the Biden selection was made, this one was the logical, and most strategic choice for McCain. I posted my prediction, for the record, on NewMexicoLiberty.com, and KNME's In Focus blog. She's too tough to fold. I think McCain helped himself big time. You can't get any further outside the beltway than Alaska. I sense a touch of panic among Democrats.

Gravatar What an amazing pick by McCain!! Gov. Palin brings in a distinguished record of executive experience, running a successful and popular Government in Alaska. An ideal ticket is one where 1 person brings in the Washington experience/foreign policy/national security experience and the other brings in executive/administrative experience. This can be seen from all winning tickets in the past few decades. The republican ticket is the perfect ticket now. She has a record of clean governance, bipartisanship and reducing wasteful spending and is an ideal choice for McCain's VP.

For all those who wish to raise the 'experience' question - do you honestly believe that Gov. Palin is too inexperienced to be President (a post for which, btw, she is NOT running for) despite being the Governor of Alaska for nearly 2 years and a mayor for many years before that, while Sen Obama is experienced enough to be President (a post he is running for)? If you honestly believe Palin is inexperienced, there is now way you could support Obama. Palin brings in executive experience, McCain and Biden bring Washington, foreign policy experience - what exactly does Obama bring in? Neither of the 2.

Also, it is incorrect to see the choice of Gov Palin as a gimmick to pander to the women voters. While that is a bonus, the most important point is that she would be an excellent person for the role of VP in McCain's administration, with the executive experience, to help him run the country effectively. None of us know too much about her, but whatever little Ive heard so far is immensely impressive. I request all voters to give her a fair chance, do some research and find out about her, and you will see that her candidacy is no gimmick.

Gravatar Mario, you were right about something! Congrats!

Good to hear all the excitement. So 'experience" is definitively off the table. And, no, sorry 9 years as a non-voting, ceremonial Mayor of a village the size of Corrales doesn't count for much. One year as Governor (elected because literally everyone else in her party was under investigation, a distinction she now shares) of Alaska, a job that consists mainly of deciding which to spend first, the windfall (yes she passed a windfall tax) oil royalties or the massive federal subsidies that inexplicably flow into a state that practices conservative socialism through the annual distribution of checks, counts for, well, not much either.

Good luck with that.

Gravatar The experience debate is now over. McCain has brought that up daily and yet a man who has had cancer on four different times and just turned 72 chooses someone with the experience of hers. I doubt he will talk about experience much now, and nor will Obama. The experience issue is no longer an issue.
McCain thought he could just end the momentum of the DNC convention with yesterday announcement, yet the damage to McCain is already done. Well over 40 million people had already wathced Obama's speech. Many million more will in the days ahead.
Many women have already seen the choice McCain made as a desperate attempt to garner their vote. I doubt it will give McCain many additional women votes in the fall. In fact in speaking with many republicans it was a pick of desperation. He started his two minute offense in the first quarter.

Gravatar I think it's a great pick. Bringing someone in with executive experience was a great move. I especially like the message of reform that this pick sends. Running against a govenor of your own party and actually winning is a great accomplishment, and it shows some courage to take on corruption, even from your own party, that's missing on the democratic side.

Gravatar I think McCain made a good pick. I am glad to see a woman on the ticket.
People who criticize his selection would not have voted for him regardless. Asking a democrat what they think of the pick is like asking a person with a flat tire "do you have a flat"?

Gravatar Haha as it turns out Sarah Palin thinks that the founding fathers wrote the pledge of allegiance. What a moron.

Gravatar Dan I think you have come up with an excellent way to pick our next president/vice-president. Give them a televised history test and the last pair standing will be our next president/vice-president.

Gravatar I have seen no word of her educational background other than she graduated from high school. Her experience as a beauty queen ought to serve this beleaguered country well.
Is this another case of REPS choosing ideology over expertise because she will appeal to the radical fundamentalist Christians?
She is nothing but a stooge. If McCain wins they will shut her up with BS busy work because the craven greedy corporate REPS do not give one wit about fanatical fundamentalist concerns, nor will they allow her to call them out on their corrupt governance. She is for show only because she is supposed to represent that the REPS intend to clean up their act. I doubt that would be the case.
She would be the most dis-empowered VP in history.

Gravatar Palin attended Hawaii Pacific College in Hilo, Hawaii, in 1982 for a semester, where she majored in Business Administration, and transferred in 1983 to North Idaho College. In 1987, Palin received a Bachelor of Science degree in communications-journalism from the University of Idaho, where she also minored in political science.

Gravatar Thanks Mike!

Gravatar She seems like a bimbo and I have a feeling she's gonna keep the late night comedians pretty busy for the next 2 months. Two years ago the mayor of a town of 6000 people and now the potential vice president for a 72 year old president with a history of skin cancer??? A reckless choice if he wins.. I am not a repub. but I saw gov pawlenty as a sensible pick or sen kay bailey hutchison if you wanna go woman. But this is just funny. Time will tell, let the games begin!

Gravatar Chris, McCain would never have been allowed to choose Bailey-Hutchinson because she is pro-choice, which is a non-starter for the reactionary lunatics that the GOP depends on to get elected. The best part of it is how, once they're in office, the GOP proceeds to ignore their base (aforementioned lunatics.)

That's the real silver lining to Republicans getting in office. As much as they claim to be anti-choice/pro-life, they never do anything about it once in office, because they know that if they somehow manage to outlaw abortion (or even leave it up to the states by removing it as a protected constitutional right) they will have absolutely nothing to run on in future elections. What else would they run on, fiscal responsibility? They haven't managed even a modicum of that since Nixon.

Gravatar Dan, well said. What also kills me about the VP thing is how they are now saying one can't talk about Palin's experience because of Obama's relative lack thereof. Of course the reality is that *they* started harping on his experience level and set a certain bar and now they pick the former mayor of Northern Exposure?? Also, Obama- say what you will about his experience level- was chosen by about 18 million people in his party- and now the general public can render their verdict on that choice. But Palin was chosen by just one person- Mccain. He could have picked ANYONE and this is it?? Fine, but the experience issue is now off the table. You can't say Obama is not experienced enough and then pick this weird lady to be your VP when you are 72 years old- all credibility lost.

Gravatar I don't believe so-called "global warming" is caused by man's activities, I think it is "caused" by man's ignorance. Ignorance to the history of this earth going through hot and cold periods. Ignorance to what the liberals call "evolution" that they themselves do not believe in. What is an endangered species (such as the polar bear)? Wouldn't that qualify as not being worth surviving? Or maybe that only applied to the past, not to the present.
Good luck Palin! I will be voting for you and Mccain because I can't stomach another 4 years of Clinton or worse in the White House.
Good job Mario

Gravatar I love it when soundbite-informed Rush Limbaugh fans think they know better than climatologists and physicists. Michael Crichton is a fiction author, not a scientist. The vast majority of climatologists in the entire world believe that global warming is greatly influenced by if not outright caused by human activity.

What is it about Clinton that you object to, his moderate policies or his marital infidelity? If its the former, you're likely to get slightly stupider/more conservative policy making, but you'll get all the infidelity with the bonus of knowing that McCain cheated on his wife while she was crippled after she had remained faithful to him for over five years alone waiting for him to return from Vietnam.

Gravatar well since I don't listen to limbaugh, I prefer Beck and the NUMEROUS credible scientists that he has had on his own program, that kills your first thought.
Secondly, Clinton didn't do much in his time in office, he was kind of able to just ride the coattails of Reagan's economic policies. This we know since it absolutely takes a number of years for any economic policies to take effect. With Clinton we had numerous times to take out Bin Laden and he just didn't. I can't really take ol' Bill seriously either when he has people like bill richardson as his UN ambassador, that guy is a joke. And as for the infidelity 1) he was stupid enough to get caught, 2) then had the nerve to lie UNDER OATH to the entire American people. People are wanting to crucify Barry Bonds for that, when they couldn't have cared less when Clinton did it. That's telling of our liberal friends.
I'm definetely not so much Pro-Mccain as I am ANTI!!!! Obama

Gravatar So you're anti Obama because... Bill Clinton lied under oath, and because he somehow rode the coattails of Reagan's policies even though Reagan's immediate successor lost his reelection bid specifically due to an economic recession. Your logic is impeccable. Also, it is somehow just a coincidence that under GOP presidents the federal deficit has gone up massively and under Clinton it fell massively and even had surpluses in multiple years.

Glenn Beck? Seriously? That guy makes Rush Limbaugh look like a moderate and his global warming denialist "scientists" are openly funded oil and coal companies and many of them double as lobbyists for those same companies. Glenn Beck is a blowhard of the first order and hasn't made a rational argument in his career.
