Gravatar Heck, i know how to fix all that... if you guys elect me president here's what I'll do... I'll just make high school graduation a prerequisite for a drivers license. Sorry kids G.E.D. spells ride the bus.

Just think the leverage that teachers would have over pliant minds if that were the case.

Yes sir, no ma'am, would be the order of the day.

And, we'd end up with a more polite driving population as a result.

hmmm, maybe I should be trolling the Democrat blogs with this.

Gravatar In my opinion your idea would only lead to more unlicensed drivers on the road.

Gravatar I don't think the definitions of graduation rate or dropout are standardized -- each state has its own. How long are these students followed? Maybe they moved out of town, or got GEDs later. I bet the feds have the best records on these kids -- they want to recruit them for the military.

Gravatar A GED is a good substitute for a high school diploma. Lot's of kids can learn what is adequate without the social BS that goes on in high school. The criterion is literacy, proficiency and skill not years spent in school.
Every kid is different. The GED should be tracked as successes as well as whether kids have their butts planted in some classroom.

Gravatar Even if Ms. Garcia corrects the procedure of reporting graduating percentages, the percentages will still be over stated. In 2004 the Legislature passed a measure that allows our school systems in NM to report those that drop out of school and get a GED in the first year after dropping out as being graduates.

Gravatar GED should be counted as success? I would argue not so. Because if we are trying to measure the efficacy of an educational system or method, GED's don't count because those guys didn't use the education system.

So if they got the desired result but didn't use the education system, aren't they more legitimate as an argument against the usefulness of our education system?

I guess I would expect home schoolers to get GED's. Then we would have what, our professional education establishment wanting the credit?

Gravatar Kids dropping out of school is not the fault of the schools, but rather the parents. Put the blame where it belongs.

Gravatar Every kid is different. Some kids drop out and get a GED while others relish the institutional existence.
The school system is good for most but not all.
GED's should count as a "success". A true measurement of success is beyond the scope of the schools as the proof is realized by citizenship, work ethic, and responsibility when kids become adults.
All we can do as society is to provide the opportunity for a good life but the kids must make it for themselves.

Gravatar "Over the last few years, funding for education has increased exponentially .." you say. You cite something saying that funding increased 6% one year.

Didn't you learn arithmetic? That's not an exponential increase. 6% a year every year still isn't an exponential increase. An exponent is a power - square, cube, etc.
