Let me lace up these gloves and get ready for another 12 rounds of AYP boxing. I'll just now beginning to wade through what info is currently available, but three things:
1. Let's keep track of how many schools failed to meet overall AYP only in the area of Special Education (SpEd) and/or English Language Learner (ELL) students.
2. Many charter schools did not have the requisite number of SpEd & ELL students (25) to be assessed on whether they met AYP in these areas. This being the case, the scores of the SpEd/ELL subsets aren't even counted. It's easy to "pass" when your tests aren't even graded.
3. Even so, the number I see from the Journal story shows that only 50% of charter schools met AYP.
I'm sorry APS does such a poor job of explaining these scores, and no, I'm not interested in taking over the job. I just think we need to look a little deeper to see what's truly significant, if anything.
And we will, just give me another cup or two this morning.

Nothing signifies the end of summer quite like Scot and I going head to head on the relevance or irrelevance of AYP reports.

Mario: Always a pugilistic pleasure, battling over these figures. By the way, I believe your first link above is to last year's scores, not the recently released ones.
I THINK the only current year data around at present is to be found at:
http://164.64.166.16/ayp2007/ayp.../
ayp07dist.html
and only breaks the data down on a "thumbs up/down" basis, without the actual proficiency score percentages.
Normally, a good fighter would make make some hay out of this discrepancy, but given the beyond woeful reporting capability of APS and its "Research, Development and Accountability" (RDA) department, any confusion is easily understood.
I'm sure RDA has some help from other entities with regards to delays and omissions of reporting, but one thinks they can more than hold their own when it comes to obscuring, confusing and mystifying with numbers.

Scot said;

And why is this OK with both of you?
Don't you suppose there is a reason for the obfuscation?
