Mario, you are looking at it from the wrong side.
I don't believe Mr. Lee is concerned about the donors, he is concerned that massive amounts his non-profit is spending on "Mr. Lee"; Salary, car, travel and entertainment costs would come to light and be public. Maybe a John Edwards type of deal, who knows.
That is why he is worried.

Wouldn't registration as a political organization have an impact on the charitable status of NMYO? If so, then NMYO's donors could lose any potential tax benefit for their donations.

Oh come on Margaret, you know that reason is unreasonable to Mario. For him, everything that any faction of the Democratic party does (like point out that certain senators voted against the new Ethics rules) is a scandal. I mean, come on, Mario wrote a big gushing post about Dick Cheney and how manly and awesome he is last year, of course he's against ethics.

Dan, please don't think I'm letting Mr. Lee off easy. Quite the opposite. Mr. Lee has a long track record of using charitable organizations for political purposes. If the money raised is being used in that way, then the donors don't deserve the tax benefit and in my opinion are accessories to circumventing the law. So, I guess that makes me another believer in Dem conspiracies.

It all comes down to whether the CCP and NMYO are engaged in issue advocacy or candidate advocacy. If the former, they're not subject to campaign laws. If the latter, they are. It will be up to the courts to decide.
