Mario,
What do you think should be done, not just in NM but nationwide, about campaign finance? Do you think the current "market-based" system, basically the richest man (or woman) win regardless of qualification?
The current system is a disgrace, in my opinion, and something has to be done, because our nation is suffering at the hands of fools.

Yeah, I haven't noticed any hate mongers running on private funds! Weak arguments indeed.

Point number one is a non-starter. Anyone who can collect the necessary qualifying donations should be eligible to run. Does Dan Foley decide who the "hate mongers" are? Of course, fringe candidates will emerge. If they can muster the necessary support, why should they not be able to run? Methinks the entrenched politicos doth protest too much.
The language of this bill seems to have a reasonable formula for disbursing funds. I am not a lawyer so it may contain subtleties of which I am not aware, but my novice eye thinks this legislation is a good start for the people to take back the state from the entrenched powers.
I would think the Republicans would be all over this one. What is the real concern here? The fact that the Dems are willing to let this get to the floor for a vote is a miracle in my opinion.
This legislation is a good start. We need public financing for all state offices, including and especially the legislature! It works in Arizona, that bastion of crazy liberalism.
Let's put power back in the hands of the people!

Candidates would still have to get many signatures, and small donations from many people. You don't just go up to the SOS office and sign up to run; you need to have support and signatures from many different people.
Also, this bill wouldn't limit anyone from running a privately financed campaign. Public financing is completely voluntary and up to the candidates themselves.
This bill is a step in the right direction and will allow those without all the financial resources the ability to run a successful campaign calling voters, not holding fundraisers.
