But would Pearce be willing to deal with the drama that a governorship would entail? Remember he would have to deal with a Democratic majority in both the NM House and NM Senate. Any legislation proposed by Pearce would be vetoed in similiar fashion or worse than during the Johnson era.
I think that the GOP desperately needs to ensure that they retain Domenici's Senate seat. Pearce's current congressional seat is safe for the GOP no matter who they decide to run for that seat.
The senate seat is not only important for the balance of power once Hillary gets elected, but Senate seats are notorious for being insulated for incumbents. If he doesn't run for it now....it may never get another opportunity.
In addition, taking the recent SurveyUSA poll numbers it appears that he is the most viable candidate against Martin Chavez.
Currently Marty Chavez and Heather Wilson race is a toss-up. Wilson has a slight lead, however, if Chavez decides to run a dirty campaign and puts the emphasis on the recent Iglesias Attorney scandal....Wilson may be doomed and so may the chances of the GOP.
Most may argue that Chavez has some broken bridges amongst his liberal base. That may be true. However, Wilson ALSO has broken bridges with her conservative base as well due to the immigration battle and her recent healthcare defection from President Bush. The main question is can Chavez unite his base? Can Wilson unite her base? One thing for sure is Steve Pearce is squeeky clean and has a united conservative base as a foundation.
Don't take the Iglesias attorney scandal for granted. Afterall that juggernaut was powerful enough to force the popular Domenici to retire.
Don't take one's conservative base for granted. Afterall they are famous for their consistent voter turnout.

Mario, I don't blame you for not wanting Pearce to enter the race, he is a better conservative than Heather. Three years ago he easily beat our current AG.
If Heather had the same amount of Democrats cross over to vote for her as he did for him, should would have easily won last year.
In a state wide primary he would dominate the Republican vote in District 2 and 3. Once the conservatives in District 1 hears his message he could split the District.
The only thing keeping him out of the race right now is the thought of going against Bill.

Pearce might be the only Republican who has a shot against Big Bill or Tom. You see, I still think come February 6th when Bill finishes 74th out of a field of 8-9 Democrats he'll see the handwriting on the wall. He has until February 12th to decide.
Udall? Well he would be my choice but I think he is also waiting to see what Big Bill is going to do.
A Udall v. Pearce campaign would be great for this state. Both honorable guys with the states best interest in mind. I don't agree with Pearce but his restraint and candor seem apparent. Maybe I missed something since I am not in his district but that is my take.
Marty and Heather: Realpolitik and nothing but self-interested hacks with no vision for the state. Phonies. They would operate in the same manner as the Clintons and Bush. Governing as a fifty percent plus one vote politician is about power not good governance. That's how I see these two.
P.S. If Marty is the D's candidate I'm writing my own name in.

If you do so, it should increase the number of visitors to you blog (perhaps dramatically), as well as give you links to pro-Republican sites. Its interesting reading (in February 200 thoughts you wrote in October. The Republican primary is virtually over (without NM input) and the Dems top two candidates have locked horns and the winner is still to be decided. I'm in Heather's district and have stamped more than my share of mailings for her mostly because she was the only game in town and a Republican but truthfully I had to hold my nose a few times because she is too liberal and panders to the left to get votes in this district. The 2008 race has finally solidified for me that I'm a conservative first, and just vote Republican because that is where the conservatives reside, but sadly so do some flaming liberals masquerqading as Republicans.
But back to Steve. Not in his district I don't know much about him but I like his stand on the issues. I hope he does well. The idea of Heather becoming entrenched in the Senate as a Republican isn't very attractive to me. Not believing in term limits, so long as Steve remains healthy and conservative, he'll get my vote and my support.
