Another interesting free expression/art project might be to lay out a half dozen Mexican or other foreign flags on the UNM campus or Central Ave. so people can walk across them and film what happens. I support freedom of expression, even when it comes to using the American flag to express dissent. But the shame of this incident is the utter indifference and contempt displayed for a man who fought for the nation that allows freedom of expression to flourish.
Contempt is the appropriate reaction to someone who can't distinguish between the symbol and the referent.
Contempt is also the appropriate reaction to someone whose idea of free speech is to destroy someone else's property, or to prevent someone else from expressing their opinion.
It's not a contempt issue at all. Here are a bunch of fools too immature to recall protocol when dealing with the American flag.
On the other side, the dementos who do this in the name of art, could maybe have just come out of a Special Ed classroom where the teacher is greatful for any little bit of work done no matter what.
