Four years ago as a State Rep I asked the Technology Over Sight Board what was the five year plan to update the State's IT systems. The answer that I got from the State Chief Information Officer was "How can I tell you that when we do not know how many systems we own" The fact is there is now plan and we just throw money at what ever might look good.

Maybe if the high-paying tech jobs for citizens in New Mexico weren't in making weapons of mass destruction, the talent would be working on things we really need. We don't graduate enough Computer and other Engineers in the US. (Only half as many as Japan does.) Our engineering professors have been mostly immigrants, but the US is making it too hard to get visas, or they can now get good jobs in their own countries.

Michelle I wish that were the case. Fact is there is no plan for the state to replace IT systems, ensure that they work and are integrated with other state systems. It is a very frustrating situation.

Planning? Trains have been around a long time and are easy to run not like computer systems where people have to count and read. Albuq. Journal Jan.25...Lawrence Rael said that he did not have an answer as to how the state will pay for the train's (RoadRunner Ex.) operation after the federal funding stops in three years. Maybe Hobbs and Farmington will chip in? How long will the train be subsidized? I'm sure the state has a plan, I know the gov. does. ( I hope this conforms to the Journals rules on criticizing Gov. Richardson)

John you are right of course the Gov does have a plan. That is to be gone when the house of cards fall. As for the state, no way.
