Thanks for Commenting

Gravatar I consider this scary stuff and needs to be explained in detail. What would be the name of such an organization KGB, Gestapo or maybe Taliban.

Gravatar Very Interesting information something we should all take seriously!

Gravatar Mario, if someday someone writes your biography it should be titled "An Uncritical Mind".

Really, if you don't want to look like such an idiot in public you might occasionally read the source from which whatever little out of context clip you've decided to pretend to be outraged about came from.

Obama's speech was about a call to public service, such as the Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, Red Cross, etc. He was not talking about military power. Are you really such a dunderhead that you can't understand that there's more to power than just the ability to blow stuff up?

Run around chicken little, they sky is falling! That Commie Hussein Osama is going to create a revolutionary guard like Iran has!

Are you really this big an idiot or are you just this nakedly a GOP spinmeister?

Where's your breathless expose on the huge issue of Obama not wearing a flag pin in his lapel? Did you forget to write one because back then you and the rest of the Hannity brigade were still so focused on Hillary Clinton that you couldn't see the lurking commie menace that Obama represents?

Gravatar I watched the video clip and at about 16:52 into the clip Barack said exactly what is reported. I don't see that it is out of context.
Mike

Gravatar Did you also see that what he was talking about is national service and has nothing to do with military power?

Gravatar What does he mean by a 'National Security Force"?

Gravatar "Context" means reading or hearing a quote AND what's said before or after. Obama was talking about opening up shuttered embassies and building up our diplomatic corps. He was suggesting that we need to spend as much time and money developing civilian ways of dealing with national security issues (i.e. diplomacy) as we spend on our military.

Teddy Roosevelt didn't just say "carry a big stick"; he said "speak softly AND carry a big stick". That's what Obama was getting at.

Gravatar I served four years in the Armed Forces. My mission was very clear. I served two years in the Peace Corps. My mission was very clear. I guess I will have to hear from Barack what the mission of the National Security Force is before I sign up.

Gravatar Uhhh, Mike? I doubt anyone is holding their breath, waiting for you to sign up.

Funny thing how Obama's reference to a "national security force" suddenly became a National Security Force in your mind. Paranoid, meet Mike. (What? You've already met?)

Gravatar READ WHAT HE SAID, PLEASE!

"As President, I will expand AmeriCorps to 250,000 slots, and make that increased service a vehicle to meet national goals like providing health care and education, saving our planet and restoring our standing in the world, so that citizens see their efforts connected to a common purpose. People of all ages, stations, and skills will be asked to serve. Because when it comes to the challenges we face, the American people are not the problem - they are the answer.

"So we are going to send more college graduates to teach and mentor our young people. We'll call on Americans to join an Energy Corps to conduct renewable energy and environmental cleanup projects in their neighborhoods all across the country. We will enlist our veterans to find jobs and support for other vets, to be there for our military families. And we're going grow our Foreign Service, open consulates that have been shuttered, and double the size of the Peace Corps by 2011 to renew our diplomacy.

"We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we've set. We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded."

Gravatar I can not read Baracks mind so how do you interpert this?
I actually intend on voting for him, so you are picking on the wrong guy.

"We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we've set. We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded."

I assume your point has something to do with capitalization verses non-capitalization. From his speech how do you know which he meant?

I am really trying to understand what he means by national security force.

Gravatar National security goes beyond pure military force. It includes internal and external disaster response (I'm sure you'll recall that, during Katrina, Mississippi and Louisiana had a great deal of trouble getting relief because most of their National Guard units were overseas.) It also includes international diplomacy - the role of the Peace Corps - to prevent international disputes from escalating to military conflicts.

To put it another way, Obama is saying that, in contrast to the current administration, his administration will seek to prevent crises before they happen, and prepare to deal with them when they do. This is to contrast from the Bush policy of ignoring problems until they explode and then either attacking (international problems) or ineffectually flopping around (domestic disasters.)

Gravatar Mike, here's how it works: forget, for a moment, the two sentences that have you in such a tizzy. Read the sentences BEFORE those two, and then stop and contemplate their meaning for a second. THEN re-read the troublesome two sentends. TRY to tie them together, to see if TAKEN TOGETHER, they make some sense.

If not, I don't know what other reading comprehension techniques I could suggest for you.

Gravatar Anything that's supposed to cost more than $400 Billion annually seems worthy of capitalization to me--and of grave concern.

Gravatar Good! Then you're concerned about the $400 billion tax dollars we spend on the military?

Gravatar thanks to whoever brought in the ENTIRE quote and thanks to whoever mentioned the foolishness of being a soundbite outrage hack. stalinesque, please.. red-bating like its the 1950s, how cutting edge.

Gravatar National Security Force includes data mining of ordinary citizens. The all seeing eye should make everybody feel real secure. Hope you don't get caught up in some data massaging dragnet.
The outrageous incarceration rate in this country should make us feel secure. Get on with the phony drug war sending more and more funds to arms merchants and mercenaries.
