Hi, just want to amend something I said above. Since this posting, several parents have told me that their own children indeed can go very quickly into DKA if they have a pump malfunction. Now that I think of it, this is part of why we chose a modified untethered regimen (daily lantus dose in addition to the pump) for our son.... fear of DKA.

FWIW, Ariel was on NPH and R insulins. Which in itself leads me to questions... what standard of medical care was Ariel receiving? I know hardly ANY families using this insulin plan any longer.

Brendon was on the same insulin when he was diagnosed a couple of years ago, but for someone Ariel's age, that is pretty unusual.
Even if the mom thought Ariel had the flu and didn't suspect DKA, she should've been testing her glucose to make sure she wasn't getting too low.
Either way, regardless of the fights Ariel gave this mom about her care, the mom is ultimately in charge of her care and is therefore responsible.
