Welcome back!!!
Glad you had fun at Disney. On the Barry Eisler front, that's pretty scary that a bookseller would do that. I know I work for an evil corporation but it sounds like he over reacted just a tad...
Although the author should really know where the hell he is going, he probably should have thought of the consequences of asking that in an indie but what the bookseller should realise is that authors need to market themselves as much as possible in terms of stock signings and appearences.
When you are not in the store, it could be between your book and the book next to it most of the time and if yours is the one that is signed over the other, thats really what could decide the sale.
People buying books ARE that fickle.
Booksellers have to realsie that not all authors are Dan Brown type rich magnates with movie offers coming out of their ears, they need to help their marketing as much as possible, because one huge campaign for a book, doesnt warrant for every author at a publisher. Some authors get no marketing at all. Coincidentally, these are normally the books that go out of print after that crunch first three years on sale.
But really, Barry should have planned his day better...
His books have sold well here in Blighty but for some reason disappeared pending reprint, some sort of legal problem with his cover art. We had to pull his last paperback for some reason.
Incidentally, that latest John Updike is an offensive weapon.
Looking forward to making the next book a best-seller as well!!

I do shop my local Indy bookseller... but here's the problem.. I probably wouldn't shop at that particular bookseller after he reacted so rudely to Eisler.
I don't owe anyone my business. I support Indys until they start to wave it in my face that I somehow owe it to them to shop there.
