It's good to know there are others in the world who are organizationally challenged. Or who have so much to do that even moving sideways is considered a feat for the Olympics.
I share your struggles and applaud your quest to find the thing that works best. I've been trying that for years...the finding part.
Schedules get lost in life crisis mode or kids being sick. I also have this horrid tendency to hyperfocus. When I am hot on the trail of writing -- that is my obsession. Sleep, food, cleaning...none of that matters while I am in this mode.
When not writing, then I am obsessing about something else. Hmm, there's an odd pattern here. Wonder if I need to explore therapy?
I like your new technique and that's what I strive to do. The 'just one thing' method. There are so many people in my life who can handle operating a 747, flossing their teeth, having sex, and reading 'War and Peace' all at the same time. I've finally learned to let those people do what they do best and focus on keeping myself focused.
When I focus on that task at hand, I am a saner, happier person. And so are my kids

This may be (as the South Park boys put it) building a sandcastle with a bulldozer, but you might have some success with the techniques in in Getting it Done (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0142000280) The system as a whole is a bit overwhelming, but it's got a lot of interesting, useful techniques related to the one you listed above.
