I'm sorry he couldn't stay over. Diabetes can throw a lousy curveball at the worst times.
And what a rotten thing for your son to have endured when that kid told him he didn't "give a shit" about your son having to eat crackers before gym class.
Your son sounds like a well grounded young man to have handled everything so gracefully.

Hey Martha,
I had to kind of think about the fact that a person not familiar with diabetes might wonder why you can't just get to your target BG and stay there... hehe! Kind of made me chuckle a bit, I must admit. If only it were that easy right!?
Touchy thing about the sleepovers. I do think that it will get better as he gets older. When kids are growing so much the control is almost impossible - which makes you guys that much more vulnerable to the highs and lows. It's a constant learning experience, and you are shooting at a moving target.
I met a woman who was training a service dog for helping with her diabetes. Simply amazing. It was very inspirational, and I think it's a great thing. I believe we'll see more and more of it as it becomes more "tried and true".
The CGMS systems are the next big thing in therapy tools. They will make a big impact. I liken it to the period when we switched from testing our urine to testing our blood. Can you imagine trying to make therapy adjustments based on the sugar in your urine?! It's HOURS old by that time!
I agree with you 100% about the people in our lives. In particular, the OC is the greatest thing that has come along in a very long time. I very much value and appreciate all of the wonderful people participating.
Thanks for the update - and best wishes for continued success with your book!
Take care!

Hi Martha,
I just found your page and loved reading your posts. My daughter is 5, (dx at 19 months) and just entered the big "K" this year. We are doing the school tango - our school has no school nurse. Luckily the secretary, along with her 15 other jobs, is happy to be trained as my backup. You know, in case I get abducted by aliens on the way to her daily check at recess.
It is a slow process but we are making avenues at the school. Keep up the good work and humor. It is through a strong dose of daily humor that my family makes a go of it every day.

Yup it sucks , pretty much sums it up. I hate back to school time.....so much to teach the teachers. Then the worring about the phone calls that are going to come.
When stuff like that happens at sleep over i just tell both my kids to dose only half of what the pump tells them. This lets them stay over still....... yes it isn't the best way. But i won't let mine miss out on stuff, your millage my very of course, and its all in what you are confortable with.
But it sucks
