I have not been for ziarat to Iran/Iraq/Syria. I did get to go for hajj, alhumdooleluh. We did some ziarat associated with that, like the graves in Janatul Baqi and the Prophet (saw)'s grave, primarily. I had been Muslim about 5 years at that point. It was a great experience, but even at that point I think I did not appreciate or understand what was going on or where I was to the same extent that I would now. The hajj part I understood a little better, but the ziarat not as much as hajj. I am sure I have a lot more to understand still. Insha'allah I hope we all can go someday.

Gravatar Masha Allah, my heart trembles just from watching this video, imagine how it must be to experience the ziyarat in person!!! I had the blessing of being able to visit the shrines of Ladies Zaynab and Ru'Qaiya as well as the one where Imam Hussein's head is kept. Masha Allah, but I was still so new to Islam that I do not think I got the full benefit of the experience, like I would get if I went now. But I was well aware of the significance of being able to PRAY in the big mosque where the villainous Yazid's court used to be. My ex-husband explained a very elementary version of historical facts, and maybe that was all I was ready for at the time. But I sat there absorbing it, and I was accutely aware of "departed spirits" whose tragic histories haunt the place, in both blessed and cursed ways. I also knew that a day would come when I would understand the significance of my ziyarat more than I did when I was actually there.
