WaPo may sanitize, but the vid is everywhere on the web. Hard to hide something as ugly as Letterman's assessment of any woman, but especially a young teen. Letterman is my choice for #1 to be castrated and fed cajones.

Piney, it was the New York Times. You must have been thinking about the Washington Post's latest anti-Palin smear, where some idiot misquotes her, then says it's hard to make sense of what she said.

It is hard to keep track of them all.

Similar thread on Pajamasmedia earlier in the week. Apparently leftist like to fantasize about raping conservative women. Seems kind of medieval to me - but what do I know, I'm just a peasant.

Apples & oranges. Obama's daughters aren't old enough to have such relations. This is one of the stupidest posts I've ever seen on this blog.
Furthermore, it's Dave's job to be funny, that's it. No left, no right. no need to bring politics into it.

OK, Dan, tell me there wouldn't be any kind of fallout from a Rush Limbaugh/Bill O'Reilly type telling any kind of rude joke (never mind those of a sexual nature) about the Obama's daughters.
They'd be persecuted in the self-righteous media 24-hours a day until their asses got slapped back to the end of the unemployment line.
"THE CHILDREN are off limits!!!!!"
To deny such a double standard exists is to deny reality, something the Left has become quite good at.

Hey Bruce,
You're just not very bright.
Letterman clearly wasn't referring to the underage daughter. In a 30 decade career he's never suggested thatstatutory rape is okay. He may have mistakenly thought it was the older daughter, so at worst he's guilty of not doing his homework.
Whether you like or dislike him, or his humor, it would be hard to argue that he is that thoughtless.
And again I'm amazed that there are people who think this is a right/left issue. Fools.

Dan, why then did it take him two days to issue his non-apology? If I said something on TV like that, and the world was talking about it the next morning, I'd be doing everything I could to clear up the air and apologize.
Or, as someone else wrote (and I paraphrase):
"You see, it wasn't a rape joke, it was a whore joke."
Also, telling was the coverage of this in the MSM. Most, if not all, of the reporting on this was reporting on the reaction to the "joke", not on the joke itself. And, a lot of that was slanted against the Palins to make them out the be the aggressors who "blasted" Letterman, and who issued "scathing" statements, while Letterman merely "joked".

The Palins, and everyone else who had a problem with the joke over reacted in a major way. Letterman has never advocated child rape(or anything similar), and it is silly for anyone to accuse him of doing so.
Surely there are more important things to spend time thinking about than a joke on a TV show.

Dan:
Why should Letterman get a pass, when an equally poor excuse for a human such as Imus gets reamed for a comment that male members of the black race routinely use to describe certain female members of the black race.
This incident involving Palin (among many other nasty things written and said about her) sounds like the usual tactic of you liberals judging not the act, but the moral and political worth of the persons involved, i.e. some people are more equal than others.
Bryan |
06.17.09 - 6:35 am | #

Because Imus is a no talent knob and you KNOW he has no senstitivity to black people. He clearly thought it was ok to say "nappy headed ho".
Letterman mad an honest mistake, thinking that the 18 year old daughter was at the ball game, not the 14 year old.
Same rules apply.
And I'm no 'liberal', more of a libertarian. The sooner people get off this left/right bs, the better.

Leno's joke in September of '08 was but one hailstone in a hailstorm of character assassination and lies intended to derail Palin's campaign.
There's no way anyone was going to pick up on all of them.
Also, my original point still stands. That's the blatant double standard in media coverage of this whole story.
Liberals get a pass in the press, just as armed, Obama supporters get a pass from DOJ for voter intimidation.
Reverse the roles, and tell me the resulting press coverage would in any way be similar.

"Letterman mad an honest mistake, thinking that the 18 year old daughter was at the ball game, not the 14 year old."
I don't believe that Dave was honest whatsoever. His Monday 15 June 2009 rationalization is that the didn't think that ANY daughter was at the game & that Gov Palin was by herself.
If making people the butt of jokes is no big deal, then why doesn't Letterman tell a few jokes about Obama, his administration, & their families & ask them to laugh it off?

"Barack Obama says he'll be living in the White House with his family, his two daughters and is wife, and his mother-in-law. Yeah, he may want to rethink closing Guantanamo".
How dare Letterman suggest inprisoning the President's daughters!
"Well, we're just a couple of weeks from new President Barack Obama being sworn in. And he's been very busy naming a lot of cabinet positions. And today he announced that he wants the surgeon general to be TV Dr. Sanjay Gupta. That was the kid on 'American Idol,' wasn't it?"
Hey that's not fair to Gupta. or for that matter to Sanjaya.
"But I was thinking about this, the Obamas want to adopt a stray dog from the pound. And I think that is admirable. I believe the last president to bring a stray dog into the White House got impeached."
Not fair to Clinton. call out the picketers!
"And as you know, like they say, Barack Obama hits the ground running. He is already naming people to be part of the staff. He picked a guy Rahm Emanuel. Rahm Emanuel, is that the holiday the writers are always taking off?"
Not fair to Jewish people.
"And then tonight, Barack Obama speaks to the convention, and they moved it to the stadium there in Denver. They’re getting, like, 75,000 people. And I’m telling you, the construction crew has been working around the clock, painting the stadium, scrubbing the stadium, plastering. It's the same team that works on Nancy Pelosi."
Poor poor Pelosi. A joke at her expense is just not fair.
I'm sure there are many other examples, by Letterman and others. so stop whining.

Let me know when Letterman makes a joke about a Democrat politician's daughter's vaginal activity.

You've certainly proven the point others have made about Letterman not being funny since the late 80's.

Also, an honorable man, upon realizing he inadvertently made a crude joke about sex with a 14-year-old girl, would have had his press people release an actual apology within 2 seconds, not 2 days.
Of course, letting the controversy simmer for an extra couple days gave Letterman that which he truly craves, hearing his name in the news.

Lots of back pedaling now.
Humor is subjective, so there is no defending whether something is funny or not.
I'm merely saying that Letterman has never intended to make jokes about statutory rape, and to assume that is the case is foolish. It's called benefit of the doubt. Fact is, the joke wasn't about about a 14 year old girl. Stop changing the goal posts.
Now, how about you defend McCain joke about Chelsea Clinton. Where is the outrage?

I've not mentioned any L/R BS. I was asked for an example of a similar joke that was told about another president. I supplied some, and pointed out that there was no outrage.
If you are offended at the joke about Gov. palin, then you should similarly be outraged at the other jokes. Or is it just your "side" of politics that you are defending?
I'm not really political (but I admit to being a fan of Letterman), just pointing out the hypocrisy.

re:Dan German : "It's called benefit of the doubt."
I se no reason why I should grant Letterman that
" Fact is, the joke wasn't about about a 14 year old girl."
Yes, it was.
" Stop changing the goal posts."
The statutory rapist apologists are the ones who want to change the goal posts
"Now, how about you defend McCain joke about Chelsea Clinton. Where is the outrage?"
McCain did apologize. I'm not defending McCain's "joke". Nobody ever defended McCain's "joke".

What I find most disturbing are the defenders of Letterman who defend statutory rape in general & attacking Palin's kids (because you disagree with their mother's politics) in particular.

Why not give Letterman the benefit of the doubt? He clearly didn't mean the joke in reference to an underage girl. he has no history of this, so no reason to think it is the case now. If there is evidence, you haven't presented it. It was (about a 14 year old), but only by accident. it's absurd to suggest he did this on purpose.
I, nor Letterman, nor anyone I know of, on either side of politics is advocating child rape. It is irresponsible of YOU to say that is the case. Get a grip on reality.
I didn't ask for an example of McCain apology. He is a decent man, like Letterman and offered one (hey, benefit of the doubt). I asked for an example of the outrage or protests.
I've never said I disagreed with her politics (I really don't care about Alaskan politics),just the hypocrisy and mock outrage directed at Letterman.

"Why not give Letterman the benefit of the doubt"
He has a paid staff of professional writers whose job is to fact check. CBS realized the statement was inappropriate on Monday when they deleted it from his transcript that is printed in the New York Times. Yet, Letterman continued to attack Willow on Tuesday.
"I didn't ask for an example of McCain apology. He is a decent man, like Letterman and offered one (hey, benefit of the doubt). I asked for an example of the outrage or protests."
There was no need for one since McCain apologized in a sincere & timely fashion, versus attacking the victim & continuing to repeat the "joke".
"hypocrisy and mock outrage directed at Letterman"
My outrage is not mock, it is sincere.

Comedy writers are not fact checkers. They come up with jokes. It's not a newspaper.
I an not defending the Times or their actions, just Letterman.
Letterman did not continue to attack in any way. You are incorrect there. He apologized (virtually unprecedented) in the context of his show, which is a comedy show.
Since when is the timeliness of the apology the issue? I have easily countered every single one of your arguments, and you continue to change the subject. That old chestnut.
Your outrage is unjustified. There are hundreds of issues facing the USA that deserve more time & thought than a lame joke on late night TV.

"Letterman did not continue to attack in any way. You are incorrect there."
No, you are incorrect. Letterman continued to attack Willow on the Tuesday 9 June show after CBS edited his 8 June transcript
"He apologized (virtually unprecedented) in the context of his show, which is a comedy show."
As NOW pointed out, Limbaugh also apologized for implying that Chelsea was a dog. Limbaugh no longer has a television show.
"Since when is the timeliness of the apology the issue?"
The timeliness points to Dave's sincerity or lack thereof. It is obvious that Dave did not apologize of his own free will & was only forced to do so under pressure of CBS lawyers & sponsors. Letterman critics extracted the apology from Dave. Thus, our effort was successful to date & we should continue our boycott.
