Hey Matt -- I sure would love for Obama to be able to win staying high, but the simple reality is that dirt and personality issues sell in politics. I think it sells for the same sordid reason so many people rubber neck auto accidents.
Karl Rove recently commented that Clinton's mistake is that she didn't go negative nearly soon enough. He might be right, given the curent state of American political intelligence.
However, there is evidence that Clinton's efforts over the last 2 months have garnered her lower approval numbers and higher disaproval numbers. But I'm not sure whether her declining fortunes are more tied to her dirt bagging Obama or her outrageous (and outrageously transparent) self-promoting lies.
