Is there a syntax for adding shortcuts to nested menu items in other applications? Seems like by just adding the exact name of the item... the key combination appears, but since it's nested the shortcut doesn't work.

I've noticed the same thing. The key combination appears next to the nested menu item, but it doesn't actually work when I try to invoke it.

If you press Option+Command+T, you can get Special Characters to come up. Choose Punctuation on the left hand side and you will see \"…\" in the list.
You should then be able to add that to the end of the text e.g. \"System Preferences…\" and then hopefully that will work.

$\"Gravatar\"$ Thanks man. I've been trying to figure this out on my own for quite some time and it finally worked thanks to your article! Now I can send emails off to a \"To Do\" folder with a simple keyboard shortcut. Which I find easier than their poor flagging system.
