this must be one the most HANDY tricks I've come along in a long time ... plus a feature i will use around 11 times a day or so from now on - just what i was looking for (in a way).

$\"Gravatar\"$ I'm not sure about this, I just tested it using 1 kHz test tones and what seems is that the standard A/V control I have in Quicktime (the middle) is set to be -6 dBFS, so if you turn it all the way up it's actually 'unity gain'. This means Quicktime is automatically turning down the audio from your movies before even asking you, another step of unnecessary attenuation if you ask me.
