I look online for help but no preveil..
tried the #sh command line but no help..

mount -uw / (this mounts the hard drive)
passwd root (this will allow you to change the root password)

you can also do this with user accounts as well leave out root and type the user name

$\"Gravatar\"$ This is a response to Andrea's question at the very top. I would suggest am encrypted sparse disk image.

To do this, open Disk Utility, click on New Image. Name the image. Choose a size for the image. This can be as big as you want. The nice thing about a sparse image versus a normal read/write disk image is that it is only as big as the files in it and expands as you put stuff into it (up to the size you chose when you created it). Choose an encryption (all you can choose in Tiger is AES-12 $\"\"$ . Click create and you will be prompted to enter a password.

You will want to uncheck the box asking if you want it to be added to your keychain. This way, nobody can access it through keychain. On your desktop, you will notice a .dmg file and a disk image that looks like a USB flash drive. Drag and drop the files you want to keep into the one that looks like a flash drive. When you are finished, drag it to the trash (don't worry, you won't lose anything). The files are now part inside the .dmg file. To access them, double click the .dmg and it will ask you for the password. You can now move the .dmg to wherever you want, including an external hard drive or flash drive. You can also store a .dmg inside of another encrypted .dmg for added security or if your just paranoid!

Formatting is always an option, but we consider that a last resort. (Plus, guess who’s going to have to help reinstall all the programs lost after a wipe?) But all hope is not lost. There are a few ways to actually retrieve a lost Windows account password. Read on, and we’ll show you the light.

1st Method:

The first thing which you check if you forget login password. When we install Windows, it automatically creates an account \"Administrator\" and sets its password to blank. So if you have forget your user account password then try this:

Start system and when you see Windows Welcome screen / Login screen, press ctrl+alt+del keys twice and it'll show Classic Login box. Now type \"Administrator\" (without quotes) in Username and leave Password field blank. Now press Enter and you should be able to log in Windows.

Now you can reset your account password from \"Control Panel -> User Accounts\".

Same thing can be done using Safe Mode. In Safe Mode Windows will show this in-built Administrator account in Login screen.

2th Method:

There are a lot of Windows password revealers and crackers available, but I’ve found that Windows Password Recovery Tool is the most effective.:
it not only supports XP, 2000, and NT, I have personally tested it with Vista Home Premium and Ultimate. It works perfectly to reset any local user account to a blank password

You can use the ISO to burn a boot CD. Follow these instructions:

1. Download ISO file from http://www.windowspasswordsrecovery.com Windows Password Recovery Tool
2. Burn to a CD using a CD burning tool such as Nero or Roxio or MagicISO
3. Insert CD into drive and reboot.
4. You may have to select an option in the BIOS to get the computer to boot from the CD.

Booting up and clearing a password takes a minute or two works like a charm.

I try different ways to login, restarting from the disc 1 intallation disc, changing my user pass, from the terminal to create a new user, with a new pass using these commands.

I need to reset my (system?) administrator password to get into the original user (me). I added another user and unchecked automatic login (bad move!) and cannot get into my user account. I'm dubious about installing from the OSX Cd as I'm worried I'd lose all my work. I've tried pressing command C on start up and following instructions but it doesn't ask for a new password. Can you please advise?

When you start up from the disk, just choose \"Reset Password\" from the menu, and don't click on anything that says \"Install\" or \"Archive and Install\".
