$\"Gravatar\"$ Even though you can't disable tooltips systemwide, you can delay them for a huge amount of time. The following command makes tooltips take 10 seconds to appear in all cocoa applications:

defaults write -g NSInitialToolTipDelay -int 10000

Use

defaults delete -g NSInitialToolTipDelay

to return to the normal behaviour.

$\"Gravatar\"$ Unfortunately in Safari 3.2 Tooltips are on by default, and they seem to have changed the way the preferences work - using that Terminal command has no effect. Any way of turning them off now?
