$\"Gravatar\"$ why would you have a full dock? use spotlight as a launcher!
apple-space to open spotlight then type two letters (usually) to get to the application you need and push return. VERY quick once you get used to it and most people will never use even a fraction of the features of launchers like Butler or Quicksilver.

I have removed ALL the applications from my dock except finder and trash - therefore I only have OPEN applications appearing in a small dock at the bottom of my screen .... very simple and slick solution I reckon.

$\"Gravatar\"$ Yeah, Spotlight/Quicksilver does the trick, plus you can move your now-minimal dock to the side and reclaim all that precious vertical space.

$\"Gravatar\"$ Some applications get their icon replaced with a blank document icon when you first put them in. Restarting the Dock (with methods noted on this site) or logging out and in again sorts it out in my experience. It's mildly odd.

You can close open apps from their normal Dock icon which opens when you click on them in the Stack.

Spotlight is a good solution I use a lot, but some apps need too many keystrokes to disambiguate and I also like the fact that when you hover over the stack, a Finder window pops up (if you have Springloaded Folders turned on) which lets you drag and drop files onto those Stacked Applications.
