$\"Gravatar\"$ You have to \"ctrl-click\" on a user installed System Preference in order to get the popup menu item to remove it. Right-clicking a System Preference icon simply launches it like left-clicking it.

At least that is the case with Leopard (10.5.7).

$\"Gravatar\"$ As Dave M suggested, you do need to control-click (or right-button click if you have a two button mouse) to get the menu option to remove a user installed preference item, otherwise it will be launched. I can vouch this is still the case for 10.4.

Does anyone know if this actually removes the application in question or just the preference reference?
