$\"Gravatar\"$ This didn't work exactly as describe for me (I'm running Leopard).

When I terminated the running Dock, it didn't restart. Fortunately, I had an open Finder window and was able to relaunch it from /System/Library/CoreServices.

You weren't supposed to terminate dock, you were supposed to restart it. The way you REALLY should do it after entering that in terminal is to type:
killall Dock
(capitaliztion is important) and the dock will reboot.
