As a hardcore Star Wars fan (there were ever only 3), I can say the Novus Trekus inclusivity makes me question Trekkie authenticity. Are you just pandering to me with your good special effects and acting? What makes me want to be you when you're trying to be me?

Brilliant, spot on.
The similarities between angry sci-fi fanboyzzz and angry Hyper-Traditionalists are striking, and cause for concern.

Not familiar with the religious references, but spot-on commentary otherwise.
And I can't pass this by without saying: Intelligent, lives in the Bay Area, Berkeley Grad, fan of the One True Star Trek, *and* frequently holding beer and strong opinions? Boy, if not for the religious predilections, I'd think you might be my dream girl. Keep up the good work!

Ooh. Thank you - and how flattering! You know, if you're good-looking and/or rich, I'd be willing to talk to you about conversion. It may not be as painful as you think - we don't require circumcision!

Oh, God, a sharp wit, too. Yer killin' me.
Circumcision isn't a concern–another religion took care of that one already–I'm just afraid that if I started going to confession, I'd spend the rest of my life saying Hail Marys. Not to mention giving some poor priest a heart attack.
Don't suppose you'd be willing to try Atheism tempered by a random hodge-podge of overheard eastern philosophy out for a short while, would you? I'm sure I could cook up some sort of byzantine Secular Humanist ritual to make you sit on a hard bench through for two or three hours every week, if that's your primary interest.

Trust me: it's nigh impossible to shock a priest in Confession.

Mr. K - Though a three-hour byzantine secular Humanist ritual sounds exquisitely tempting, I must send my regrets. You atheists believe in SCIENCE!
(Incidentally, Gene Rodenberry was a secular humanist!)
Sam - Quite right. More often, it's you who are shocked. Confession is a humbling experience.

No, we *don't* believe in science. That's how it works
Incidentally, yes, I credit early & frequent childhood exposure to The One True Trek as formative in my values system. If you think about it, Gene Roddenberry is probably one of the few modern figures to successfully infect a generation with his attitudes. Lucky guy. Plus, he got residuals on top of it, something none of the other great teachers of western civilization has managed to pull off.
Trek probably also responsible for my deep "outsider" fascination with religion. I may not be able to to explore the stars, but there's plenty of strange, far-out cultures and philosophies to discover and peaceably non-interfere with right here on earth. No green ladies in miniskirts, though (except in Buddhism.)
As to not being able to shock a priest, I'll take you at your word. But, what if he can tell you're *trying* to shock him? Does he give you extra rosaries for that? I don't have a lot of free time.
