Gravatar Sir--

Future generations will have difficulty understanding our whimsical times because of our addiction to irony, which often falls flat on the printed page.

Surely you know that representing in motion pictures the fact that at least 25% of the population smokes is in no way recruiting smokers, no more than representations of murder, which are legion, are exhortations to take up the practice.

I can only assume you are being ironic. Your humor is very dry.

Gravatar Well, Time Warner also owns some magazines who regularly display cigarette advertising (Be smart, be Kool) that for the tone used seem aimed at the young people, so the Doc has some point in it. BTW i'm somewhat skeptic of the effectiveness of those ads. In my opinion, they mostly lead young people to pick a brand instead of another, rather than taking up the habit.

Gravatar Brett is certainly right. Lots of American movies and videos contain crime, horror, and drug scenes to the point where this can be seen as being normal (or should I say "normalizated").

Gravatar I'm waiting for the day "It's a Wonderful Life" gets an R-rating because old Mr. Potter smokes a cigar.

Gravatar Very confusing, are the anti-smokers now attacking each other and claiming each other to be pro tobacco? Time-Warner is owned by Ted Turner (Turner Foundation) which it and the Robert Woods Foundation (Johnson & Johnson), have long been heavily involved in the anti-smoking movement both in providing funding and lobbying against smokers.

I don't know who produced and released the movie Constantine, but it really should be called anti-smoking lies with a little story in it. That's the only type of connection I might expect from Ted Turner's Time-Warner and it's purely negative toward tobacco.
