Gravatar Multiple Chemical Sensitivity?
Potential stressors include practically everything that modern humans encounter, such as urban air, diesel exhaust, tobacco smoke, fresh paint or tar, organic solvents and pesticides, certain plastics, newsprint, perfumes and colognes, medications, gas used for cooking and heating, building materials, permanent press and synthetic fabrics, household cleaning products, rubbing alcohol, felt-tip pens, cedar closets, tap water, and even electromagnetic forces.
Ronald E. Gots, M.D., Ph.D., who has reviewed the medical records of more than a hundred MCS patients, describes MCS as "a label given to people who do not feel well for a variety of reasons and who share the common belief that chemical sensitivities are to blame. He further states: "It defies classification as a disease. It has no consistent characteristics, no uniform cause, no objective or measurable features. It exists because a patient believes it does and a doctor validates that belief."

Gravatar Granted, my experience with this sort of thing is limited; ironically, my mother, a non-smoker, is the only person I know to be afflicted with asthma and severe allergies, but it sounds like total BS to me, Doc. I would suggest that if the child's allergies are soooo severe, that the very SCENT of smoke triggers a reaction, perhaps the child should be in a bubble in his/her bedroom at home. What if that teacher was a non-smoker, but used a wood stove to heat her home? What if that teacher uses a particular creme, shampoo, soap, perfume, etc., eminating a scent that might trigger the child's allergies? Why should the staff/students have to alter their lives to accomodate one sick child?

Gravatar Doc,
This is more of the same. Sure, she got fired because she smoked.
I would guess the reaction by the student was either fabricated or induced.
Do you really believe the reaction would have been the same had the substance been from benpal's list?
I hope this does not occur, but if this continues there might be a violent reaction from a smoker.

Gravatar I thought it was already ascertained that one can not be 'allergic' to the scent of smoke (or the smoke itself) due to the total lack of any protein matter (which is what an allergic reaction is).

All it takes now is one person to point and cry "Smoker!" in a crowd to have someones life ruined.

Excellent job Doc. You can retire now, mission complete!

Gravatar Why should the staff/students have to alter their lives to accomodate one sick child?

Backtalk,

One school here in Phoenix actually DID just that. ONE child in the whole school is allergic to nuts. Not only have nuts been banned from the school, BUT the other kids cannot even bring PB&J sandwiches from home for lunch (my friends' son's favorite lunch to bring).

All this because ONE CHILD with an allergy, can't be taught how to protect himself.

Then there's the school that recently banned the game of tag at recess because 2 kids felt bullied and cried to mommy who whined to the school who cow-towed in fear of litigation.

Unfortunately, this is the American way these days.......the founders and authors of the Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights and Constitution are dying a thousand times over in their graves over this "new world" that tramples all over their hard work and sacrifices.

Gravatar Doc; "The interesting question is: Did the employer act this way because the worker being fired was a smoker? Or is this the way all school employees are treated?"

Hardly interesting, nor unexpected.
Rhetorical question perhaps?
The board spokesperson say's this woman was not fired.
(at least not officially....yet)
If/or (likely) when it does happen, some other less sensational reason will be cited....afterall, it's for the children.

The school board is just another example of the uninformed torch bearing angry villagers looking to kill the monster they no nothing about.

Gravatar Following up on Lightning Boy's comment, the newspaper article stated:

"A district spokeswoman told FOX 4 that she couldn't talk about the case but did say Lidster had not been fired."

Gravatar No, she hasn't been fired, yet.......

However she has been publicly humiliated thanks to the workings of the anti-tobacco cultists such as Godshall who is most likely rubbing his hands together in glee over this woman's misfortune.

Gravatar Lynda,

My sons are also not permitted to bring PB&J sandwiches (their favorites too) to school for lunch. Last year, I was chastised by a teacher for putting some halloween candy in their lunchboxes for dessert. She told me that some of their classmates are on "special diets" and cannot eat candy, and it makes them upset to watch my sons enjoy their sweets. Boo friggin hoo! When did human beings become so fragile? When I was a kid, none of us saw a doctor unless we had a broken bone. (And even then it had better be busted up good & need to be set, otherwise, just stay off the damn thing til it heals and stfu, lol!) Skinned knees and elbows were a part of growing up, hell, we were taught not to CRY about such things. Today, a child can't ride a tricycle without headgear, knee pads, elbow pads.. Everytime a child gets the sniffles he/she is rushed to the doctor's office & put on antibiotics and/or cold medication. What happened to a little rest and a steamy bowl of good old-fashioned chicken soup? It seems like the world has gone completely insane.

I'll say it again, if my child's immune system were so fragile that the very smell of smoke could trigger an allergic reaction, I'd keep my child safe at home.

Gravatar Backtalk,

I hear you and couldn't agree more. Growing up we had better be bleeding to death or you weren't seeing the doctor. Not until mom did her thing with tried and true methods at least (rest, chicken soup, etc).

I have a tiny scar on my thumb from when learning to ride a two-wheeler (a used one with the rubber tips on the handles missing) and taking a fall. I have another tiny scar in my left eyebrow from climbing a fence at Fanny Farmers Candy Factory (yep, loved the smell that permeated the air there) and falling. Then the one on my knee from falling on glass. Not one of these falls resulted in a doctor's visit.

I don't know what's happening today, but it is scarier than any nightmare I have ever experienced in my life.

I've actually apologized to my son for bringing him into THIS world. He's still pissed at me for having him in this day and age.....I'm just grateful he's an adult now and not baby.

Gravatar Funny, but I live about 20 miles from Denton and no local NBC, ABC or CBS stations has carried this story. Seems like it was only Fox who has aired it. My guess is because there are lots of smoking cowboys in Denton and they might be afraid that the Principal may be scheduled for a good old fashion hanging. Hey, if they could hang someone for stealing a horse, why not for stealing ones job, income and freedoms.

On the otherhand, maybe the Principal actually did her a favor. Who the hell wants to work with a sniveling little brat day in and day out? The picture in my mind right now is Bill wearing a bib while sucking on a lollipop while screaming that his aide is wearing lip stick and won't share it with him. Bill's next endeavor will be to ban all makeup! Hopefully, no one will apply for the job so to replace her and then mommy and brat can fend for themselves for a change.

Gravatar The picture in my mind right now is Bill wearing a bib while sucking on a lollipop while screaming that his aide is wearing lip stick and won't share it with him. Bill's next endeavor will be to ban all makeup!

OMG Diane!!!!! I about fell off my chair reading that one............worse now that I've seen the BG's pic (though I suspect it is an old one).....hehehehehe

Wrong. Ms. Lidster is responsible for the publicity about her situation because it was she, not the school district, who reported the story to the news media.

Gravatar Bill G.: Wrong. Ms. Lidster is responsible for the publicity about her situation blah blah blah

I notice you didn't deny rubbing your hands together in glee over her misfortune.
.

Gravatar Wrong. Ms. Lidster is responsible for the publicity about her situation because it was she, not the school district, who reported the story to the news media.

"That's right. You smokers need to sit there and take just a little humiliation, or risk greater humiliation. If you smokers don't want to protect yourself from risk, that's your business. That's just the way it is/should be."

Gravatar Andrew, "That's right. You smokers need to sit there and take just a little humiliation, or risk greater humiliation. If you smokers don't want to protect yourself from risk that's your business. That's just the way it is/should be."

So okay Andrew, I just sat here and took it. Now it is my turn. Please sit and listen to the silence, then hear the clapping and applauding. That is the rest of the world cheering when I tell you to "pick a finger".

Gravatar Diane--I really should have made the sarcasm tags obvious, probably because I've seen and been on the wrong side of the reasoning I'd mentioned above, and it reminded me of something totally unrelated to smoking where people used the same tactics. I will make it clearer next time.

I can't help but think back to 20 years ago when students whispered "oooh, teacher so-and-so smokes" as if it was something to leverage against a teacher.

The shame tactics are just being legislated instead of whispered now.

PS Bill--more selective quoting. No, she wasn't fired. But you forgot the next bit:

The spokeswoman said because Lidster is an at-will employee, she could be terminated at any time for no reason.

So, if you ever go talking about workers' rights/protection--well, remember what you said about this worker and how you selectively quoted her situation to fit your wants.

Gravatar Wrong. Ms. Lidster is responsible for the publicity about her situation because it was she, not the school district, who reported the story to the news media.
Bill Godshall | 09.18.07 - 6:42 pm | #

WRONG. She was correct in publicizing the havoc and grief you and the rest of your cult have wrought on normal people. As more of the stories of the harm you have done to others is brought to light, the more you will all be seen as the fanatical cultists you are.

You and your lies Godshall have destroyed the lives of countless people and you will eventually pay the price.

Gravatar I applaud this lady for going to the press. Though with The Way We Are Now, the majority may well be huffing and puffing at how hideous it was to expose a poor child to the deadly assault of third hand smoke. I'd also have to question if the teacher "smelled" at all or something other was afoot--from the kid, its mother, or someone on the staff.

:

Gravatar "Though with The Way We Are Now, the majority may well be huffing and puffing at how hideous it was to expose a poor child to the deadly assault of third hand smoke."

Not to mention exposure to the deadly assault of first-hand peanut butter and jelly!
.

Gravatar "Last year, I was chastised by a teacher for putting some halloween candy in their lunchboxes for dessert. She told me that some of their classmates are on "special diets" and cannot eat candy, and it makes them upset to watch my sons enjoy their sweets."

Sorry, you should have told the teacher that you'd put into your child's lunchbox any friggin food or dessert you wanted. You simply have to fight back, in very strong terms, and not allow this coddling idiocy to tank our society and turn the next generation into a generation of wusses. It's your duty as a parent and a citizen.

Stand up and speak out, for chrissake!
.

Gravatar A lot of crazy people can argue very logically. But when you do try to reason them out of their absurd beliefs you just get sucked into their madness. I am more and more convinced that this whole ETS scare is some sort of collective psychosis or hysteria brought on by social engineers like Stanton Glantz. I don't think anymore that I can reason America out of this peculiar mental illness. I don't like to use profane words online, but from now on my one word response to TC arguments is "Bullshit!" Thank God for that accurate, healing word.

Gravatar Harry,

My husband advised me to tell the teacher to go to hell. But I am afraid of the State. I live in Mass, where the Dept Of Social Services is a frightening organization with unlimited power. A call to DSS from an angry teacher could put my entire family at risk. Do I take a stand about halloween candy and chance it? Perhaps I should. It's a tough call.

Gravatar Backtalk, you could just throw their own argument back at them by informing them that it makes your children upset that they are denied their treat because of the children on "special diets", and you don't feel your children should be made to "feel upset".

Lots of kids have special needs and learn to deal, let the children on "special diets" learn to deal.

I would NOT cave in to this form of mamby-pambying.

I would love to know where it is written that there is some constitutional right to never be offended. I don't understand this concept.

Gravatar Backtalk, I agree wholeheartedly with Lynda F and Harry.

I realize the idea of dealing with DSS is a scary thought, I know people who have gone through it and for a reason similar to what I was threatened with a disciplinary hearing that could lead to DSS involvement. Three simple words was all it took to get the over zealous bureaucrat to back off: I DARE YOU.

That was a year and a half ago and I haven't heard a peep about such a thing since. I still have my problems with that bureaucrap, but she knows better than to cross me, particularly when I am right and she is wrong -- which so far has been the case.

The anti-smoker cultists are very much the same, confront them with facts and they resort to name calling and threats, they are incapable of anything else.

Gravatar Afraid of the state is just how they want you, makes you easier to manipulate.

Just glad I took all of mine out of school....

You got to love the medical warnings/sarc

By the way, is it safe to drink Coffee this week?

Gravatar Only one person left a comment on the peanut article Glister posted. She says she has no faith in scientists or their "studies."

Good for her. The more the scientists yap, the more their grip loosens. That is, on all but the weakest of minds.

Gravatar OMG Gilster. When will folks figure out that the proper response when a public health expert tells you what you should consume is to... put your hands firmly over your ears, get away, and then go about your business.

Gravatar Agree with Lynda Gabz and Jales,

A friend 8 yr old took one of those lunchables to school and as he as it, the teacher walked by and took the small candy (1" square) and threw it in in the trash.

The mother called the principal and got alot of uh huh, ummmmmm etc.
His mother has instructed the child next time to tell the teacher to keep her hands off of his food.

We are waiting to see what happens.

It really all comes down to when do you stand up for yourself? If you don't no one else will.
.

Gravatar And if you give them a 1" square, they'll take a square mile. Who knows that better than we? They know that for most folx it's painful to "stand up" and also that most want to "avoid confrontation." That's the meat Caesar feeds on. And the reason why people have to push back while they've still got the strength to push.

Besides, you can always move. At least you can move till there's no place to move to.
:

Gravatar Sunz,

I hope your friend makes as big a stink as possible about this. I mean, A BIG STINK! SUE!

(Only half kidding.)
