Interesting... I'm going to have to disagree somewhat though. If advertising revenue isn't a "successful" business model, then what about all of those TV and radio stations? What about Google?
I agree that you'd need a killer site in order to generate good ad revenue, but then again you also need a killer product or service to get enough customers to break even. Either way, it's a difficult task, and I'd sum both up as being legitimate business models.

Hi there Adam,
I think your ideas of limiting yourself with "one" killer site and not business makes sense.
But when people begin making a successful site, once you break that consistent 1000 uniques/day barrier you are in another zone.
You can begin buying adwords/other advertising to your site. You can begin creating smaller sites of the same niche as sister sites. Begin interlinking and networking all of these sites. Also, same works with creating small blogs in the same niche.
Once this stabilizes, you move into niches related to your original niche so you can continue your networking of sites.
Then you can also create businesses from these niches, like e-commerce sites. Although this is a lot safer than throwing yourself out into one business plan, it can prove much more successful for some people.
If you can spend enough time and gain a total of 10,000 uniques/day for a whole empire of sites for example, you can top $100/day, which can go above $40,000 a year. If you don't have people depending on you financially, living with that much a year is very possible.
I guess it all depends on the person and their luck and skills?

Oops, sorry for double posting. I would like to add though, that either route works. I think creating content site after content site and learning from that could take many, many years and luck to acheive.
I was being a bit too forceful that content sites work, but only to counter-attack your post.
Businesses can work very well if they succeed, best example could be you Adam, heh, I think you're able to only work on your businesses as your own boss right?
I was saying more so that, for some people (like me), a mix of both content sites and then later on, introducing business sites once i'm established is much more safe and has a much higher chance for success than trying to create businesses from my dreams with difficulty.

Guys - great comments. I kind of expected that response. I definitely agree that advertising is a successful business model for TV, radio, Google, etc. I was more trying to appeal to the YE looking to start an online biz. I just don't think it's sufficient to think that if you get a ton of traffic you can turn that into a successful biz just by advertising. Obviously there are sites out there that do it, but it seems to me like most sites out there have some other revenue source besides ads. From a personal standpoint, I wouldn't want to have to rely on AdSense revenue. Compared to selling a product or service, you have no way of interacting with your customers and growing relationships that will result in repeat purchases (or the continuation of a subscription). It's scary to me to rely on people clicking on ads to make a living. That's just me I guess...
