Thanks for the great post. I really want to make one of these, but don't have much experience. Is there any danger of the wires getting crossed and it sending a current back into the laptop? Probably a stupid question but I just wanted to know before I get into it.

Jon,
Yes if you cross the wires up you will be shorting the electrical connection. You will see an error pop up on your computer complaining about the USB port, however I think most laptops have protection on their usb port's to protect against a short. As with anything electrical a short circuit is rarely a good thing. If you have an ohm meter or multimeter you can check your connections before you plug them in. I always recommend checking connections first.

You say to connect the resistor to the negative, but on the LED wizard it shows it coming off of the positive lead.
Which is correct?
