We are right there with you. Our kids have stayed with non family members only a few times, and then only the closest of friends on the rare occasions that we leave them. (We have no family members in this area at all.)

It does seem weird to not have them there. I know even with the Grandparents take the kids the lack of sound is more disconcerting than you would think it should be. It's very weird, and I totally understand what you are saying!

Brandy: Yeah, the remote family trap. You don't get the 'inlaw hassle' but then you are missing a support system as well. Maybe if we recorded our kids most annoying moments and played it on a loop for the time we are away ... naw.
