Jacob, I don't think it's unrelated to self-esteem in the sense of a generalized sense of personal ability. The latter however might be better developed by action rather than theory. Tackling small tasks successfully might supply the confidence to move on to progressively more ambitious engagements.
I had to laugh at the relation of this brief piece to hippie ideas which seemed to resemble the philosophy put forward in Lin Yutang's "The Importance of Loafing".
I could never understand how people with those ideas could want to live on rural communes and live low-tech lives. The two don't go together. But they confused lots of young people.
