I find an interesting parallel to religious values here. I'm not saying you mean for there to be, but I see one nontheless. Loss of traditional values into an ether of "whatever you think" is precisely why people can't graps seemingly opposed but in reality mutually supportive paradigms.
Jacob, do you mean the idea that you can be satisfied by giving things up because you'll never be satisfied if you think you falsely believe that you need everything to be satisfied.
I think it's a primary spiritual idea. If those are the traditional values you are referring to, I would agree that it's there in them. But I don't see it as being only there.
Because although many of us never get it, it is, really, common sense.
