Thanks for the excellent advice. I'll be sure to put it to good use the next time I'm in the market.
I suppose a statement like that should be already prepared (and rehearsed) when you make the call. It's probably also valuable even if the guy picks up!

Sean:
Yes preparation is key here I should have mentioned that.
And it works wonderfully if you connect live with the person.

Great post...Have you chaps seen anything, on Business Pundit or elsewhere, on "voice mail etiquette"??? I posted an article on e-mail etiquette on our co's intranet home page a couple of years ago (which I happened to edit, conveniently). Would love to find something similar on voice mail.

I haven't seen anything on voice mail etiquette but I am sure there are some articles out there.
I should follow this up with another posting on voice mail because so many other things people do on voice mail piss me off.

Might be even more effective if the candidate could think of something he forgot to mention or emphasize in the resume, or even better some new information ("I just sold the Gerbilator account against competition that was considerably cheaper")

Dave that's an excellent point.
Sometimes there are good things that aren't on resumes.
