Gravatar You are right but for positions that are this senior I think that companies are uncomfortable using HR to hire someone who is for all intents and purposes their boss.

It's kinda like having the warehouse guy hire the Supply chain Manager.

However I do beleive that the board of directors should have a strong enough feel of who is a good internal candidate and at least be able to make that decision without paying an outside firm a tremendous fee.

Typically they would say they are paying the firm to scour the market and make a recommendation and if the recommendation is that there is no better candidate than the internal one then they have earned their fee.


Gravatar I was on a committee of a non-profit that hired H&S to recruit a new Executive Director back in 1999. I was not in favour of using them as I thought this would be too small a job for them -- 50% of the candidate's US$150k salary. Small for H&S, but a lot for the organization. The successful candidate was a friend of the Board Chairman and had been proposed by her. 'Nuff said.


Gravatar Beautiful JGS! I know a person who is with an an exec in a bureaucratic organization. There was a shift at the top of the org chart and a consulting firm was brought in to pick a new CEO and fill all of the executive positions that were affected by the change. They just shuffled around all of the existing people.

Ironically, one of the recently promoted execs was soon dismissed - at the insistence of all of the others. The dismissed person was misbehaving but his behaviour had not been noticed by CEO. In fact, he was able to turn the CEO against his peers until they rebelled. And although the entire staff had recently been interviewed and assessed none of this had been foreseen.

I'm sure that their fee was larger than any I've ever seen.
