Gravatar Comment on Troubling Trends in Canadian Competitiveness with the United States - TRU Group Inc, Tucson AZ Toronto ON. October 14, 2004 Canada competitiveness ranking living standards

I refer to Shawn McCarthy’s World Economic Forum report ‘Canada slips in competitiveness’ to rank #15 from # 12 in Business Competitiveness. The United States ranked #1 and it is the comparison with the US that should most trouble Canadians. Canada cannot compete in its overwhelmingly main market and manufacturing in particular is far behind the United States in productivity. Strategically Canada faces a calamitous long term future if changes are not made. This situation is seemingly unnoticed by mainstream economists who repeatedly tell Canadians that the economy is strong. In fact, much of Canada’s recent growth was on the back of a lame currency and falling living standards masking Canada’s precipitous fall in comparative competitiveness with the US.
