I believe this is happening because we have expanded the limits of "free speech" to the point where no boundaries now exist. Thanks, of course, are due to the ACLU and a host of its acolytes who scream the instant we touch their sensitive nerve endings. The availability of on-line blogspots has made things only worse.
Despite this, we still expect editors to show more tact and common sense in printing matters that offend public taste. That, unfortunately, has not been the case. We have found out over the years that editors are nothing but an extension of their owners, who have their own agenda to grind.
Free speech, apparently, has come to mean anything we want to say, never mind the contents and the consequences. Shouting fire in a crowded theater has become commonplace in this country.
