The rude answer Mr. Kofi Annan gave to a legitimate question by Mr. Bone -
concerning a Mercedes car his son bought and brought back to Ghana without paying taxes - is typical of the evasive and haughty attitude of a man who has been given a pass, so far, for the corrupt way the UN Oil-for-Good program had been managed. Despite the well-known scandals, well-documented by the investigation of Paul Volcker, a lot of people are puzzled at why Annan is still there while continuing to thumb his nose at those who ask him questions relevant to the scandals.
I'm just glad the UNCA took up the cudgels for Mr. Bone, contradicting Mr. Annan's description of the reporter as embarrassing. We of course know it's the other way round.
If he has any balls at all, Mr. Annan ought to resign as part of drastically revamping the UN and as a first step in restoring the credibility of this organization. The United States, which foots the major bill for UN operations, ought to withhold that money until a makeover is completed. I hope Ambassador John Bolton can make those drastic changes, or the UN will remain a discredited body.
