This may shock you but I'm pretty sure I read 'To Be an Arab in Israel' when it first came out in the 1970s & guess who wrote a forward to the book? You're simply not gonna believe this & I wish I could find it to embarrass the jackass, but it was Alan Dershowitz. In those days, he was sympathetic to Israeli Arabs & actually interested in human rights work in Israel. It seems impossible to believe in hindsight, but there it is.

Richard,
Are you completely sure about that? My copy has the Foreword by IF Stone.
I'd be quite surprised, because el-Asmar gives Dersho a serve in the book, over the hatchet-job he wrote on el-Asmar after meeting him while he was held in administrative detention. Would be good if you could find it and confirm what you recall.
My impression is that D. hasn't changed a great deal when it comes to Israel.

We were all sympathetic to the Palestinian people until we realized that their goal was not statehood, but genocide.
Then we lost our sympathy.

Nice comment there Jacob...Yes the Palestinians are out to get us with their spoons and unfilled plates cause they don't need them anymore since eating became a bit too pricey... What a joke of a comment.
For Richard Silverstein:
Count me in on info about Dershowitz's foreword. Would really like to see that...

Kidding aside, historical Palestinian incompetence is no reason to discount their dreams of genocide. Even a blind pig finds an acorn once in a while.

Jacob...
"historical palestinian incompetence"?
"dreams of genocide"?
Your barrel rings empty again. Where is this proof of your regular unabashed "insult" of statements?
"even a blind pig finds an acorn once in awhile"?
on the contrary, it seems you still haven't found one.

Dehumanisation and demonisation of 'the Other' makes one's own secret desires more titillatingly attractive and legitimate.
This behaviour worked stunningly for the relevant historical role model to create useful gangs of thugs to persecute his 'Other' also.
