Both projects are awesome and wonderfully wooly. I can tell that you're anxious for the fall just by the warm projects you're knitting!
The socks will probably end up getting some pilling if your brother actually wears them, but hopefully it will be confined to the foot and heel area, and it won't be too much. I wonder if aversion to pilling runs in your family

i'm not enjoying the cutting
i'm also wanting to try out the peace fleece on a sweater for me but first i said i would finish the cardigan i've started which i'm doing in sheep shop eggplant
