So that's how they do it! Thanks, Melissa -- I always wondered.

Now I know how! Thanks for the info.

A little intimidating...

So cool to see it in action and know what it looks like...thanks for sharing!

Wonder how you get that job of driving down EVERY road in the US!

...and I wonder how much it pays! :>)

from June 5...
we have an all wheel drive car that we use for regular CT driving, and when i'm in NYC i walk, take the subway, or ride my bike - never drive.

never say never.

I hope they pay those drivers well! That's a lot of driving!

that's awesome! The NYT saw it too: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/2...gion/ 23car.html

@Birdie right, what i said on 5 june is correct.

when i'm in NYC i don't drive, but i do have to get to my apartment. that's what i was doing yesterday when i was driving my car. i had a bunch of luggage and the dog, so taking the train wasn't an option. the car goes in the garage and stays put. once i'm in/home, i'm all about walking or public transport.

cheers, mel

My goodness! Were you snapping pics and driving at the same time?

Interesting...thanks for the info.

Major coolness! That is so neat that you saw them in action.

I think Monty took the pictures. ; )

Thanks for the interesting tidbit...as for driving, please don't bother to be defensive. We all do what we have to do -- even Birdie. Judge not lest ye be judged.

This is such a funny coincidence! My daughter and I went to Philadelphia today and on the way home we spotted a Google maps car! I also took a picture of it! It's such a funny sight to see!

I just saw the Google map-mobile circling Beacon Hill in Boston yesterday while running. They're taking over!

Cheers to Blonkika...Mel, you don't have to explain anything...we know you're commitment to the environment...also, we've seen enough snaps of you on your bike tor walking/running...we should all be so determined.

Haven't seen a snap on the Subway

Amusingly, since you mention the spare tyre... the only time I've seen a Google car near where I live in England, it was broken down by the side of the road! Bet that didn't get on the internet....!

Is it really such a great idea to be snapping pics while you are driving?

Well I have never seen the truck, but I know they have been down my street. I just recently moved, but on my old street, the "street view" contains a very nice image of my SUV!

I've always wondered how that worked!

Oh my Gosh Birdie! Mel has to get in & out of the city somehow!! I think you are making a lot of assumptions here. I seriously doubt Mel is out cruising. Take it easy & lighten up.

How cool to see the East Coast Google car! My dad is the Google mapping guy here in California!

Just to answer anyone's curiosity ... My dad is a retired executive, and wanted a little extra side-job, so got the gig through a temp agency. He's paid really well to just drive all over California, all day long. They are pretty strict about the days/hours he needs to be on the road - some days up to 12-14 hours a day, 6 days a week. That said, he LOVES doing the job! Yes, they supply the car, the maintenance, gas, etc. He mapped the entire state; north, south, east, west. I believe there were a couple of others doing it too, but he definitely went EVERYWHERE! For example, having to go up into the High Sierras in February to map the Mammoth Lakes area, just after a deadly avalanche took out a portion of the highway. I always worried about him toolin' around in that crazy car! He worked for them for about 2 years, and actually just finished up within the past few months, but hopes to get back out on the road to hit new subdivisions, new areas, etc.

Thanks for posting this, Melissa!

Melissa: Did you take note of your location so that you can go back and see yourself smiling, waving, and "snapping" on Google StreetView?!!
