Gravatar Did Nagin really say that? Well, I'm not surprised he doesn't want rebuilding left to the market. It just might put him out of a job, because there wouldn't be enough of an economy for him to "redistribute."

Nagin planned a great press conference; he must be taking lessons from Chuck Schumer. He had both video and still cameras going as he watched an excerpt of President Bush. He even wore headphones for emphasis. And, of course, he was "shocked."

Now say this in your best Claude Rains voice: "I'm shocked, SHOCKED...!"

Perhaps Nagin said to Gov. Blanco, "Might as well not do a thing, Kathleen. It would take a miracle to get these people out of New Orleans, and that evil Bush has outlawed miracles."

Maybe Michael Moore could make a Katrina documentary and have Nagin narrate the opening scene. It would tell of how only rich white people were able to evacuate: "With the coming of Hurricane Katrina, many eyes in imprisoned New Orleans turned hopefully, or desperately, toward the safety elsewhere in America. Houston became the great destination point. But, not everybody could get to Houston directly, and so a tortuous, roundabout refugee trail sprang up. New Orleans to Arkansas...across to Oklahoma and even Utah...then by taxpayer-paid Greyhound, auto or airplane across the deserts of New Mexico, and finally across the plains to Houston. Only the fortunate ones through money, or influence, or luck, could obtain exit means and scurry to New Orleans' outskirts, and from New Orleans' outskirts to Houston. But the others wait in New Orleans...and wait...and wait...and wait."

But don't mind me. That movie started playing in my mind once I heard Nagin's "shocked" claim, and my best friend at work says I'm having another of those days.

Gravatar The federal government most certainly can assure us that everyone is fully prepared.

According to you, George Bush does so right in that video, and Mike Brown was all over the news before the hurricane, assuring everybody that the government was going to handle everything.

What the federal government can't do is make good on those assurances, and I wish they'd stop pretending they can as justification for taking our money.

The media's mistake is in focusing on what George Bush said and did in the days immediately surrounding the disaster. That's too late. By the time the Weather Service had a high-confidence storm track, there was nothing much the President could do about it. FEMA had a plan and they were going to follow it. Any tinkering or management from the top would just make it worse.

The real question should be why FEMA did what it did, whether it could have been done better, and what Bush's role was in that. Start with why in a post-9/11 world he allowed a couple of political hacks to run FEMA.

Gravatar In the end its irrelevant. Its just like the public schools. We'll establish that government is not the solution, and then spend a lot more money on government. The do-gooders of the world have to feel they're doing good, and there's always a politician around to help them feel that way by taking their money (along with everybody elses).

Gravatar CF, this post is right on. The media apparently likes government as god. It is unfortunate that we didn't hear and see more of the countless acts of assistance by private individuals, companies, and associations.

Government has but a single mode of operation--application of force. There are only certain things that may be accomplished this way. Taken to its ultimate, force is both impotent and self-destructive. There is a reason we should be promoting limited government (especially at the federal level).

Gravatar Thank you!; I needed to hear that. Very inciteful.

Gravatar Great blog with good informations and pictures.
Thank you for this interesting blog.
I have bookmarked it.
It is great to find articles about this issue. On our blogs in Germany everybody is still writing only articles about the September 11, 2001 attacks. That sucks :-(
But there are also still other important topics as this here, for example.
If you want visit my blog: Limousinenservice Blog
