Another reason why I have no interest in having a dog.
I'm actually, terrible as it is to admit, sort of looking forward to when our elderly cat passes on. The idea of not being responsible for any living creature's sh*t but my own is becoming quite appealing.
As if dealing with stupid mommy guilt isn't bad enough. I think you should take a "stick it to the man" attitude toward other dog owners. "Well, maybe it's YOUR dog who can't play well with strangers, lady!"
You know, I have two dogs and I keep them both far, far away from dog parks. Both because of the cootie factor ( worms, fleas, etc) and the horror stories you hear regarding fighting. Our vet recommends not going as well. Especially now during flu season ( yes, there is a canine flu)
We have BIG dogs ( mastiff and a 130 lb lab mix ) so I completely hear what you are saying....sometimes I wish I had a little pug so I could say " here. watch my dog for the weekend. look how little and cute and compact not only he is, but his poops as well" We too have a "pet nanny" who we pay to come three times a day. It costs waaaay too much, but knowing our dogs are home safe and sound and not in some crazy barking place where they are going to get eaten by other "socialized" dogs is well worth it. I think both you and Lilah will be happy with your decision.

I don`t know exactly where you live, but my favorite uncle lives in Alexandria with three friendly dogs, and would probably be willing to get them to meet up for playdates with Lilah. I only mention this because who knows, the way BLOG KARMA works, he might live near you.
For instance, I met "Uncle Roger and Aunt Rachel" on Blogging Baby, before we even knew we would be transferred to SF, and we ended up living in their neighborhood.
There is never quite enough guilt to go around, eh? Lorddy.
Although I admire their devotion, those hardcore animal lovers/workers can be so damn sanctimonious about pets and what we do or don't do for them.
