Those crazy handkerchief/stick contraptions are called bindles, it took me three years to find the anwer to that question, but I finally found it and I will now never forget it ... use it wisely my friend :-P
People who carry bindles are called bindlestiffs. Another name for hobo, used mainly by those hobos who wish to avoid the attentions of the Evil Puppy Blender.
