It's somewhat unfair to use a picture of Colossus to illustrate this article.
Tommy Flowers and his team delivered Colossus on time (i.e. in time for D-Day - a very ambitious schedule) and, I suspect, on budget (not that budget was a key consideration).
Colossus was also designed for a highly specific purpose (although it was highly flexible) whereas government IT projects tend to suffer from feature creep and are plagued by poor initial project definition. Colossus worked brilliantly and helped to decript Fish (the Lorentz cipher) with huge benefits for us all.
So the photo could hardly be less appropriate.
Also Patricia Hewitt hadn't yet been born so the "customers" of Colossus were not subject to an avalanche of patronising cr*p at their expense.
HJ- yes you're right of course. I only used the pic because it's...well, such a great pic. I won't drag Bletchley into this again.
