If Ed Balls comes anywhere near my child, her school, or my family I will not be held responsible for my actions...

It is looking ever more likely that I shall emigrate before those awful ID cards become compulsory

Wat
You (and I) may be sceptical, even cynical, about these appointments but the BBC (costing taxpayers £3.5 bn annually) could hardly contain its excitement at the new cabinet: the "biggest reshuffle for 50 years", "the first female home secretary" etc etc. It's all going to to be wonderful and, of course, no spin.

Emigrating is not enough. They will still get you via the awful new passports - now the most expensive in the world.
I thought France was far enough away but now Panama is looking increasingly attractive (with the right visa package you can qualify for a passport after ONE year).

Emigration... yes, there's a thought.
I know someone who is currently reviewing all the main options. His conclusions will be posted on BOM for the general good.

Umbongo- Gawd, yes the BBC reporting was truly historically screamingly appalling.
It reminded me of that great night of the Sheffield rally, when ex-Grauniad BBC political editor John Cole breathlessly reported from the balcony that "this is the most exciting political event of my lifetime!"
Gah!

Hmmm... I was diagnosed with a terminal illness a while ago and being an atheist haven't had the comfort that a few of my religious friends have, that they will, in the end, go on to meet their Maker. I now head towards oblivion, happy in the knowledge that I don't have to put up with all shit for much longer...

David/Henry,
Well spotted. A chief whip for Home Sec'y is a good way to try to control the internment/ID card rebellions.
Further, please note that since the flavour of the month was made Foreign Sec'y the tame media have stopped all reporting on the EU constitution.

I should try a nice drop of cask-conditioned ale if I were you.
It's the only conceivable reason for living in this open-air prison. Every other drink you can get anywhere.
Although I must admit absinthe is easier to smuggle and avoid duty on.
