MP's (Labour backbench) demand pay rise. (weak) PM says he will not countenance that pay rise. Tories call for rise...he wins...Tories call for no rise...they agree with him and he wins.
He is desperate for something positive in the headlines and this is the kind of puerile thing he thinks will give him credibility.

Yes, that's exactly what Mrs T says, and you're both almost certainly right.
But that doesn't mean Mr Punch and his egotistical chums don't believe they really are underpaid.
Remember Punch is only a PPS so doesn't cop for any extra salary. And he did give up a quango job which I'll bet is now better paid.
I think his anguished interview came from the heart- it made my Xmas.
